How to get the trunk struts of a 2001 Ford Escort SE to contract?

I just bought to trunk struts for my grandparents 2001 Ford Escort SE hatchback and when I received them they don't contract. They stay in the expanded position and no matter how hard I push I can't get them to contract. Will they close if I install them and close the door? I don't want to wreck them already. Also, they are gas powered if that means anything. Any advice would be awesome. Thanks!|||install them, they are very tough.|||I agree with that other guy, just go ahead and install them. Trunk lids are heavy as **** especially on a hatchback so they need to be strong.
