What type of freon does a 1994 Ford Explorer Sport 4WD take and how much does it cost?

My boyfriend needs to get an idea of how much it cost to replace the freon in his 1994 Ford Explorer Sport 4WD. What type does it need and how much does it cost to replace? Also is there a website I can go to to look at for info on this?|||It doesn't take Freon (which was the trade name for R-12) it takes Suva (which is the trade name for R-134a). It usually costs about $7-$10 for 12oz. Your car probably holds 34oz. total (2.2 lbs). To have a shop recharge the system will be anywhere from $100-$250 depending on the shop and time of year.|||It would be better to retrofit it to r134a. It'll be cheaper in the long run.|||R-12 and it cost $60.00 a pound|||THE AUTO PARTS STORES HAS KITS TO BUY, HE CAN TELL THEM WHAT ITS FOR....ALSO, ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO, THEY HAD A SHEET I READ U MUST HAVE A LIC. TO USE FREON....ALSO IF HE HAS NO AIR WORKING, HE HAS GOT A LEAK OR LEAKS.....FOR SOMEONE TO DO IT, COST ABOUT $90 BUCKS TO FILL IT......TO REPAIR IT, IT WILL BE AROUND $875.00 BY NOW.....|||call a ford dealership they should know|||buy a kit at any Auto parts place to change from freon to the newer stuff .himself

each can of recharge costs around $12-$14 depending on store/area

I am a gal and can recharge own air conditioning system because of this do it yourself kit|||If the "freon" has slowly leaked out then a refill takes about 2 1/2 cans. Local to me, WalMart has cans for $7 each. Some better stuff with sealer/leak detector mixed in runs about $9 a can. You need a filler hose to put it in, they have those and even cans that already have hoses for about $12 each. About any car parts place will have the same stuff too.

If the vehicle lost it's freon all at once then it's very likely it lost its "oil charge" also. The AC compressor is like a little engine and needs oil in it. You can also buy the oil in cans, it's just mixed with the freon and it will go to where it's supposed to. If there is no oil or not enough, the repaired AC system will work fine for a while and then the compressor will lock up and basically be ruined, just like a car being driven without oil in the engine.

This should give you an idea of the price of the "cheapest" fix. But...your freon leaked out for a reason. Until you find out where it went it's pretty much a waste to put more in, it might even leak out as fast as you try to fill it. You really need to take it to a shop. Prices vary widely from shop to shop and in different areas of the country. You'll probably just want to find out what has happened first and then have the shop give you a repair estimate. Most shops will tell you the price for just that much work over the phone. There are any number of things that could have happened and it really takes a professional with professional (and expensive) tools to really properly service AC.

By the way, your 94 does in fact use the newer R134A freon. Most car manufacturers got their vehicles changed over from the old R12 to R134A in 1992-1993. My 1994 Explorer was built to use R134A and so is his. "SUVA" is trademark of DuPont is actually used on a variety of products; R134A, R235fa, 507, HP80, and a bunch of others. You can say "freon" though not absolutely correct and people will pretty well know what you're talking about. Calling it "R134" works a bit better in your case and this is the usual name people other than DuPont put on their cans.

I've had good luck finding good Explorer info at http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/index.鈥?/a>|||well its about $150 canadian and if your in the us well just take off about 15 to 20 percent off of it and that will be the round about price. I'm an Auto service Tec. you might need a retro fitting to so be careful who you go to. It can get costly. you can get back to me at lapdog2020@hotmail.com. just add me to msn messenger. ok later sorry i can't help you any further....Chris
